Where is the source of domain search? [closed]

There are several websites providing service of searching for free domains (websites, not registrars). I wonder where is the source of these searches?

This search cannot be based on local database, as it needs live data (of available domains). The only possible way (to me) is to fetch every query from the original NIC (e.g. nic.com), but I was unable to find an API for this service.

How to find a source to write a script for domain searching?
